Why oh why oh why is so much of what we do in life subject to credit checks even when you aren’t actually applying for any credit in the first place.

Need a bank account…. they’ll do a credit check even if they aren’t giving you credit

Need a mobile phone…. and guess what, its a credit check even when the contract is a sim only one and no worse than a landline phone

Need to rent a house…. another credit check

Why must we have all these credit checks??? When no credit is involved. Seems you cant do anything these days if you either have made mistakes in the past OR you have no prior credit history. So as no one who recently turned 18 can get credit (or even basic services for which credit checks are needlessly applied) eventually once all the “credit worthy” people get round to dying, no one will be able to get any credit and the housing market, banks, telecommunications and various other industries all go bankrupt because no potential customers can pass their needless credit checks. Which might not be such a bad thing
